CELEBRATING SABI’S 35TH YEAR | SABI 35STE BESTAANJAAR IN 2011 |
|

FEESTELIKE SABI WES-KAAP GHOLFDAG |
|
From memory and lots of assistance from Jerry, the formation days of SABI consisted of, basically, the bringing together of the business/private sector of the industry (smose) - which included the designers, who had a small membership under the Automotive banner and were referred to as the Irrigation Association – with the Co-op’s, local government, academia, students and farmers/growers sectors. Water Affairs, as it was called in those days, wished to be able to address one association on the importance of the effective and efficient use of our most valuable asset: namely water. Moreover, A.G Tech services at Silverton under “Tikkie’ Brewer and Charles Crosby wanted to get some quality into the products being offered in the industry. What was needed was one person to bang heads of the various splinter groups, which was not going to be easy - as each one had a vested interest. The academic sector of the government wanted a purely technical institute/association. The private and co-op movement did not speak to one another. Clearly it was going to be a challenge to get them all under one umbrella and to get the infrastructure in place that made sense to all and which could survive in the long term. I have purposely tried to leave names of founder members out, in the fear of upsetting anyone, but must mention one person in particular by the name of Andre Brink, who was with Water Affairs. Andre pulled all the right strings and got all parties talking together, put together a constitution and together with leading members from the various groups and regions founded SABI, started the magazine, which was to be the mouth piece, and all of which we are now celebrating this year during the 35th birthday term of SABI. Founding an association is one thing, but getting it to continue, grow, offer training courses, and not least of all be accepted by all concerned, including overseas similar associations is to be acclaimed and celebrated on this occasion. Those members I am alluding to know who they are and we salute you on this occasion. Congratulations to all members of SABI - this is a special occasion! |

SABI is to celebrate 35 years of being in existence and growing (nog al)! This is certainly a significant milestone and all credit should be given to all those involved throughout the years. It is one thing to start an association, similar to SABI, which was no mean feat - but to keep it going, increase the number of |

IRRIGATION SALES ASSISTANTS’ COURSE HELD IN PRETORIA |
|
This new addition to SABI’s training portfolio was presented for the second time in 2010 from 8 to 10 November 2010 at the ARC Institute for Agricultural Engineering in Pretoria. The 20 learners who attended reported that they obtained valuable practical information: skillfully compiled and presented by Johan Barnard, former SABI president and recently retired after many years of experience at co-operatives in the Western Cape. The course aims to introduce sales staff working for irrigation companies, cooperatives and even hardware stores to irrigation pipes, fittings, sprinklers, pumps and filters so that they can assist clients in selecting and applying the equipment correctly. The course is also suitable for aspiring irrigation designers, who want to obtain good practical knowledge of products available in the market. The course will be presented again in 2011 – to receive information on the planned locations and costs, look out for |

A graduation ceremony was held on 7 December 2010 at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto for the first 69 learners who completed the Batataise youth development programme in the beautification of public health care centres and old age homes. SABI facilitated the landscaping and irrigation training for the learners on the programme, which is funded by the Gauteng Department of Health and Social Development. Part of the course was practical implementation of their new skills by improving the gardens at Baragwanath Hospital. In her welcoming address, hospital CEO Johanna More said that the learners and the programme have made a significant contribution to the hospital grounds by providing a beautiful garden where both patients and staff can sit peacefully, away from the bustle of the wards. Both she and hospital facilities manager Witness Mbhalathi, however, stressed the importance of maintaining the gardens from this point onwards. Team leader Jabulani Maseko, who was one of the learners on the course, said the programme gave him hope by showing that there still are people in South Africa who want to help others grow and improve lives. His sentiments were echoed by the representative of the National Youth Development Agency, who supports the Batataise programme. The provision of services is key in the development of our communities, and the involvement and development of young people in services is crucial. The level and quality of any service that a person provides, determines the reward that you get from others – whether it is a client, an employer or a friend. Key note speaker Bongani Ngomani, chief director of regions and institutions at the Department of Health and Social Development, said that we see more negative than positive images of our youth in the media. However, youth such as the learners who have completed the Batataise programme can be ambassadors and advocates of positive youth development in our communities. He stressed that when you do right, you will get the right results, maybe not immediately but you have to stick to what you are doing. His comments were received with cheers from the group of learners in the audience, who he told to go forth and become leaders in industry. The proceedings then moved to the hospital wards, where the Garden of Reflection was officially opened by Mr Ngomani and Mrs More by the cutting of a ribbon. Learners received their certificates and the irrigation system for the garden was started up. SABI would like to thank course facilitators Chris Stimie, Stephanus Smal, Uli Peters, Renee Wright and Karel Lubbe for their commitment to the programme and developing the young learners. The next phase of the Batataise programme will be offered for youth from the Tshwane municipal area, starting in January 2011. The learners who have already completed the course, are available for employment in the irrigation and landscaping industries. For more information, please contact SABI TEO Isobel van der Stoep on 082 331 4987 or isobel@sabi.co.za. |
